Drake

Drake was elected in 2021 as a Torch of Wisdom Foundation Board Member. He has been actively involved on several committees including Art Extravaganza. Drake is involved with the Torch of Wisdom Foundation because of its emphasis on education, cultural enrichment, and community that excites me.

To be able to impact programming that fills in the gaps and exposes Detroit area youth to ideas and concepts that help them to develop skills that they can use well into adulthood is nothing short of exhilarating. Far too many of our youth fall by the wayside, and he believes that it is often due to lack of exposure that this happens.

Drake feels that African American youth have societal headwinds that are unique and require more focused and intense engagement than some of their counterparts. He is motivated to give back because he knows the pitfalls one can make in their youth and believes that he can make a difference in helping to avoid them.

Drake has produced and promoted multicultural events and concerts for top national musical artists for the last 20 years. Through his company, Urban Organic, he works closely with many artists and have helped launch careers of a number of acts, including Kem, Robert Glasper, Jasmine Sullivan, Ledisi, PJ Morton, Avery Sunshine, Eric Roberson, Goapele, and others. His company organizes tours, directs publicity campaigns, and books artists throughout the United States and Canada. Additionally, UO conducts marketing campaigns for various automotive interests, beverage companies as well as local and national publications.

Drake holds a true kinship with the City of Detroit and feels its complete resurgence is tied to its embracing of the arts, which includes its rich musical legacy as well. More recently Drake has begun producing more visual arts events as he believes the promotion and collecting of African American art is, by and large, one of the most enjoyable and tactile ways to preserve our legacy. Drake is honored to have been recognized for my entrepreneurial and community efforts by The Detroit Free Press, The Detroit News, Michigan Chronicle,

Rolling Out, Billboard, Blac, Uptown magazine, The Metro Times as well as Crain’s Detroit.

He has served on the Governor’s Arts and Cultural Awards committee. He worked as Rental and Operations Director at the Charles H Wright Museum for 7 years where he had oversight over the museum’s events and impacted public programming. Additionally, Drake served as Director of Marketing and Special Events for Real Times Media, organizing events throughout the U.S.

Drake is a graduate of Morehouse College and holds a Bachelor of Arts in English. He is a board member of The Irwin House – Detroit and past board member of Fresh Perspectives Seminars, and the Nataki Talibah Schoolhouse.
